DefendAir by ParaZero is a new Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS) technology that has been developed to turn the tide against the increasingly common modern drone threat. DefendAir is ideal for protecting ground forces, military and government facilities, and a wide variety of other assets and potential targets.
In this Q&A, Yuval Gilad, Chief Product & Technology Officer at ParaZero, discusses the DefendAir drone-mounted net interception system, highlighting its capabilities, core technologies, and applications.
Can you provide an overview of DefendAir and its key capabilities in countering drone threats?
DefendAir is a versatile and highly adaptable C-UAS solution for various scenarios. At its core is a net launching pod that can be integrated into a variety of elements, each with its own unique use case and interception characteristics from a soldier or police officer protecting its squad or a crowd, to stationary canons defending a single unit such as critical infrastructure, military or government targets.
In its drone configuration, the DefendAir becomes a rapid and effective C-UAS solution able to perform high-speed pursuit in the air and intercept faster and higher hostile threats. The design of the pod allows us to fine-tune the system parameters to reach the optimal work point for each type of threat and use case, e.g. faster deployment at a close range and increased distance. The pod is capable of deploying different types of nets and fabrics, each tailored for its target type and properties.
A main advantage of the DefendAir solution is its effective yet simple design, making it both relatively affordable in comparison to other options on the market, while providing excellent performance and versatility for the user.
What core technologies power DefendAir?
The DefendAir utilizes years of experience and patent protected parachute deployment mechanisms, which deploy parachutes of any size in a fraction of a second. This design was optimized and scaled for the purpose of being a C-UAS solution, putting emphasis on various characteristics that are more important for this use case.
The design relies on proven, non-explosive technology from the automotive industry as its energy source for the deployment process, making it a highly reliable and non-dangerous solution, allowing the DefendAir to be deployed in urban environments.
What types of environments or operational scenarios is DefendAir best suited for?
The DefendAir is designed to be used on the battlefield by infantry and armored units and in urban environments by law enforcement forces and other authorized security personnel. The DefendAir is suitable for all environments due to its design and powered by technology.
The versatility of the design makes it optimal for point defense, personal defense, and as an aerial actuator to be carried by an intercepting drone of almost any size.
How do you see DefendAir being integrated into existing defense and security infrastructure?
By definition, the DefendAir is designed to be the “last line of defense” meaning it could easily be incorporated alongside other solutions such as RF, GPS Jamming, or even long range interceptors, including explosives.
The DefendAir can easily complement existing defense arrays of critical infrastructures, government buildings, or be mobilized by maneuvering ground forces in its personal rifle configuration.
Thank you for your time, it’s always great to talk to ParaZero and we look forward to reporting on the DefendAir and your related drone safety systems.
