Thales has unveiled PANORAMIC, an advanced night vision goggle designed to provide special operations forces and tactical units with an impressive field-of-view in low-light conditions.
Debuted at SOFINS 2025, this system enhances situational awareness, enabling operators to detect and respond to threats with greater speed and precision during high-risk missions such as counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations.
Developed in just over two years with full funding from France’s Defence Innovation Agency (AID), PANORAMIC is the latest breakthrough from Thales’ soldier optronics centre of excellence. The system is currently undergoing evaluation by the French Army’s Technical Section (STAT) and Special Forces, reinforcing its potential as a game-changing addition to modern battlefield technology.
Unlike traditional night vision goggles, PANORAMIC integrates four light intensification tubes, effectively doubling the user’s field-of-view to approach the capabilities of the human eye. This expanded peripheral vision allows soldiers to survey their surroundings without excessive head movement, reducing cognitive strain and enhancing reaction times in fast-moving combat scenarios.
PANORAMIC has been designed to provide the best balance of performance, ergonomics, and compactness available on the market. Weighing just 740 grams and no wider than a standard helmet, it ensures minimal bulk without compromising capability. The system features a helmet-mounted flip-up function, while its outer tubes can be independently raised, automatically powering off for enhanced discretion in covert operations.
Designed for extended missions, PANORAMIC operates on internal batteries with the option of an external battery pack for prolonged use. It is fully compatible with Thales’ XTRAIM weapon sight and other night vision systems, ensuring seamless integration into existing combat setups.
Alexis Morel, Vice President, Optronics, Missile Electronics and Unmanned Air Systems, Thales, said, “SOFINS is the ideal opportunity for us to present PANORAMIC, our new extra-wide field-of-view night observation device. Thales’s team technical expertise allowed the development of a ground-breaking night vision solution offering the robust design and outstanding performance needed to support the success of night-time missions and protect our soldiers at their most vulnerable moments.”
Built entirely in France and ITAR-free, PANORAMIC is a rugged, future-ready solution designed to support evolving battlefield requirements. Its robust architecture allows for future technology upgrades, ensuring continued relevance as night vision capabilities advance. With an optimized maintenance plan, PANORAMIC maximizes operational availability, providing forces with a high-performance, long-term solution for night operations.
