Spectra Group (UK) Ltd, a specialist in mission critical beyond line of sight (BLOS) communications systems and secure networks, has partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to elevate their strategic communications capabilities.
This collaboration focuses on optimizing the potential of Comtech’s Troposcatter Modular Transportable Transmission System (MTTS), offering the AFP a robust and adaptable solution for critical communications.
In 2024, Spectra Group secured the global distribution rights for Comtech’s Troposcatter Family of Systems, excluding the USA, Canada, and Mexico, which remain under Comtech’s purview. In addition, the company expanded its global presence with the opening of an office in Australia, enabling them to better serve the Asia-Pacific region.
The Tropospheric scatter communication technology leverages the troposphere (up to approximately 13 km altitude) to provide high-bandwidth, satellite-independent communications. This capability is especially valuable in GPS/GNSS-denied environments, making it ideal for use in peer-to-peer conflicts and multi-domain operations. Known for its low latency and substantial bandwidth, Troposcatter can handle large volumes of data, making it suitable for both strategic and tactical headquarters. With its low operational cost and ability to deliver up to 500W of power, the MTTS system is the most flexible, rapidly deployable, and modular solution available.
For the AFP, the MTTS system offers key advantages: it is easily deployable, highly mobile, and able to maintain robust performance even in the most challenging environments. This ensures that critical voice, data, and video communications remain operational when traditional infrastructure is unavailable.
Throughout March, Spectra Group has been conducting an extensive familiarisation and training program for the AFP. This initiative is designed not only to maximize the operational potential of the MTTS Troposcatter systems but also to build indigenous expertise, ensuring long-term self-sufficiency in maintaining and expanding this vital capability.
Shaun Barry, Business Development Manager at Spectra Group, said, “We have been working hard over the last couple of years to develop opportunities in the Asia region and this training programme is a good example where we are directly supporting our customers to not only get the best from their equipment now but also sustain that capability into the future. The region is extremely geographically complex which presents multiple strategic communication challenges for security forces and Spectra Group has have a number of superb systems including Troposcatter, SlingShot and soon GENSS that provide the perfect solution to these challenges.”
